William Dunlap Knox papers, 1870-1876.

Letters written from Spartanburg, Pine Grove, New Centre, and Fort Mill, S.C., re life during Reconstruction-era addressed to William D. Knox while a student at Davidson College, N.C., and later when employed at a store in Kingstree, S.C. Letter, 1 Feb. 1871, from Agnes McDill (Pine Grove, S.C.), commenting on the extreme cold weather during the Christmas holiday break from school and noting that enrollment at her school was larger that the preceding session. Also commenting on the number of barns, gin houses, and mills burned by arson lately in "this county," fires that were thought to be "the work of incendiary." She reports that African Americans had threatened to burn York, S.C., in retaliation for acts committed by the Ku Klux Klan, noting that the citizens were guarding the town every night, "The radical party (Negroes) are dissatisfied the way the K.K. are acting they whip every negro that acts contrary to their wishes and the negroes resort to burning for revenge." Letter, 8 Jan. 1872, from Agnes McDill, New Centre, S.C., re imprisonment of citizens from York County, S.C., who had been charged with Ku Klux Klan activities; and letter, 25 Oct. 1873, from J. Harvey McClintock, Fort Mill, [S.C.], who had been a student at Davidson College with William D. Knox, giving advice on the courtship of women and complaining of discontent with his position as a school teacher. Also including letter from R. Brandt, jeweler, of Chester, S.C.
